Understanding Your Oral Health & Tooth Pain: A Guide to Common Dental and Gum Problems

What are the most common dental and gum issues?

    • Caries (Tooth Decay): This is the gradual breakdown of your tooth enamel and dentine caused by bacteria in plaque. Sugary foods and drinks contribute significantly to caries development. If left untreated, caries can lead to pain, infection, and even tooth loss.
    • Gingivitis: This is the early stage of gum disease, characterized by inflammation of the gums. It’s often caused by poor oral hygiene, leading to plaque build-up. Gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment and care.
    • Periodontitis: This is a more advanced form of gum disease that develops if gingivitis is left untreated. It involves the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the bone and ligaments. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loosening and eventual tooth loss.
emergency dentist Bromley. illustration showing a healthy tooth vs that which has periodontal disease (or gum disease)

What are the symptoms I should watch out for?

It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of dental and gum problems:

    • Bleeding gums: This is a common sign of gingivitis or periodontitis. Healthy gums should not bleed when you brush or floss.
    • Toothache: This can range from a dull ache to a sharp, throbbing pain. It can be a sign of caries, an abscess, or other dental issues.
    • Swollen gums: Swollen, red gums are a key indicator of gum inflammation.
    • Receding gums: This is when the gum tissue pulls back, exposing more of the tooth. It can be a sign of periodontitis.
    • Bone recession: This is the loss of bone support around the teeth, a serious consequence of periodontitis. It’s often not noticeable until later stages.
    • Loose teeth: This can be a sign of advanced periodontitis and bone loss.
    • Bad breath: Persistent bad breath can be a symptom of gum disease or other oral health problems.
    • Changes in bite: If your teeth don’t meet together properly, it could be a sign of underlying dental issues.

Disclaimer: This is general information about dental and gum problems and does not constitute medical advice. It is essential to consult with a qualified dental professional for diagnosis and treatment of any oral health concerns.

A dental abscess is a painful collection of pus that forms in your teeth or gums. It's usually caused by a bacterial infection. There are three main types:

    • Periapical abscess: Occurs at the tip of the tooth root.
    • Periodontal abscess: Occurs in the gums next to a tooth root.
    • Gingival abscess: (Localised within the gum tissue itself).

It is important to treat it quickly as it can lead to more serious infections if left untreated.

    Symptoms can include:

    • Intense, throbbing toothache.
    • Sensitivity to hot or cold.
    • Swelling in the face or gums.
    • A bad taste in the mouth.
    • Fever
    • Swollen glands in the neck.

During an emergency dental appointment in the dentist may:

    • Numb the area with a local anaesthetic.
    • Make a small incision (cut) in the abscess to allow the pus to drain.
    • Clean the area thoroughly.
    • In some cases, prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection. (this is a private prescription. The dentist will provide a written prescription and you will pay for the medication at a pharmacist).
    • For a periapical abscess, a root canal may be required during a follow up appointment.  (Additional treatment costs will be provided).

The immediate pain relief from draining a tooth abscess is due to the release of built-up pus, which eliminates the primary source of the painful pressure.

Prompt dental treatment is essential to prevent infection from spreading.

    •
    • Extirpation is a dental procedure where the nerve (pulp) is removed from the tooth by a dentist).
    • This is often done when the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed (usually due to deep decay).
    • Symptoms of a need for extirpation can include:
      • Severe, throbbing toothache
      • Sensitivity to hot or cold
      • Swelling around the tooth
    • During an emergency appointment, your dentist might perform an extirpation to:
      • Relieve pain: Removing the infected nerve eliminates the source of the pain.
      • Prevent the infection from spreading: If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and cause further complications.
      • Save the tooth: In some cases, extirpation allows the dentist to save the tooth by filling the empty space within the tooth with a special material.

Dr Ismail worked wonders on my teeth. When doing my research i was offered lots of quotes by different places but none gave me a detailed explanation of what i needed to have done and why. I can safely safe Shmile not only made me feel comfortable but they also made sure i was happy with the process and their knowledge and information was very thorough. I would highly recommend! Thank you Dr Ismail:)

Glad i found this place to get my teeth cleaned. (A stop-gap as my dentist had nothing available for three months) On the day of my visit the place was welcoming, organised and attentive. Abigail carefully assessed the inside of my mouth and explained all processes before getting to work. I particularly appreciate that she did not rush through the process, and not once did she let her tool slip into my teeth. During the whole treatment a dental nurse assisted her. Abigail seemed genuinely interested to help me care for my teeth.

What can I even say about Dr Ismail. I am the most nervous person when it comes to dentists. Generally I will go once and never go back. On Wednesday I attended and I needed a tooth out, I was petrified! (I will say from the moment you walk in you are greeted by the most friendly people on reception ! All 3 people who have been there when I have gone in were so helpful, warm and friendly!!) Dr Ismail spoke me through the entire procedure and assured me the only small pain I would have would be the needles, and he was right. The lovely dental nurse also reassured me constantly. Both Ismail and the nurse lady made me feel totally at ease! I am a bit over sensitive and paranoid so I have returned to the dentist twice since the procedure just for some reassurance on healing, and from the moment I walked in the door I was welcomed. I wasn't made to feel silly or paranoid, I was treated kindly and the whole team really could not do anymore!! Thank you so much to all of you!! I wish other dentists realised that kindness is key, which is exactly what Shmile radiate....kindness!! Have a wonderful Christmas!!
